Spring Is Here!

Joey requested to have flowers this year.  I've always wanted flowers, too, so we decided to pick some up.

We visited the nursery down the street to pick out flowers.

I just had to include this photo.  When Joey was enjoying
Scooby Doo so much, this car was so exciting to see in the
community.  It's painted like the Mystery Machine. ( It's
actually a Lexus.)  We finally passed their house one day
and Joey admired the car.

Gluten Free

So, it's been about 2 1/2 weeks now that we have been gluten free.  (I'd say about 95% - I haven't called various food suppliers to see what they mean by "natural flavors," and I am told to assume it could be gluten.)  The learning curve continues, but it is "do-able."  We have been told that Joey is also intolerant to milk, but that is the difficult one for me.  We have eliminated drinking cow's milk and currently have almond milk, soy milk, and rice milk in the refrigerator.  It's the whey in Cheetos, the butter on vegetables, the cheese in macaroni and cheese.  We have made great gains, but have not mastered casein free, as of yet.  I think - one thing at a time. . . . .

Jose is thrilled with the change.  He has a wheat allergy and has wanted to be gluten free for awhile.  However, since he didn't follow the diet outside the house on his own time, I didn't believe it was worth the effort on my part.  Jose is doing well - he thinks it's the best!

Joey was thrilled with the initial change.  Any time we talked to someone, the first thing he wanted to tell them is that we are gluten-free.  We waved to the neighbor across the street and shouted "hi."  He whispered to me, "Tell her that I'm gluten free."  He always makes me laugh.

I didn't have to tell the teachers at school twice, because Joey told them multiple times.  There is a boy in Joey's class who has Celiac disease, and Joey has always been intrigued by it.  Luckily, he has a great same-age role model who is a great self-advocate.  Joey has finally become frustrated with not having some of his favorites.  He said, "Everything has gluten!"  I do feel bad about it - it's tough for a little guy who loves chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese.  I suggested he talk to his friend at school about it.  He said he already had, "He said I'll get over it."  I couldn't help but laugh.

We are on our way.  We have recently added digestive enzymes to his diet.  I have read in one place that some gluten-intolerant individuals can eat gluten as long as they take the digestive enzymes.  This is a great thing to know for birthday parties with pizza and cupcakes.  We'll see.  I am currently hiding the enzymes in Dove dark chocolate.  Joey has already figured it out (in less than a week).  He always keeps me on my toes.  I always say the easiest thing with him has been potty training.  Now, now, I should say he is a quick learner and quite the cuddler.  I have so much to be thankful for, but he is such a negotiator and stubborn. . . . just like his father!

Anyway, we are on our way!  I think it's been hardest for me - I've taken on the challenge to make this transition easy for Joey with lots of fun foods and still maintaining a healthy diet.  I will say this week Joey's class had cupcakes, and the teachers report Joey did great choosing one of his "special snacks" I have provided.  No big complaints!  It has been easier in some ways than I thought it would be, but requires so much more preparation time - hopefully, that is a temporary, transitional thing.

OT for Joey

Joey has started occupational therapy.  Yes, I am an occupational therapist, but Joey is my son, and I wouldn't say I have the expertise that outpatient pediatric OTs have with kids like Joey.  Fortunately, and unfortunately, OTs have quite a spectrum of jobs.  Working with all ages, in all areas of function in life.  Now that is great - we can always get a totally different job with the same degree.  However, it is difficult (impossible) to be an expert in all the areas that OT addresses, so we all "specialize" in certain areas.  Anyway, back to Joey.

I am thrilled with the outpatient center I have chosen.  Lots of experience, a holistic view on my child, a positive feel with lots of love.  They "get" Joey, and, therefore, he loves going there.  They let him lead some of the session - because they know he will participate more that way.

Anyway, in a nutshell, Joey's postural reflexes continue to need integration (side note:  we had made so much progress, but with his recent immunizations, he has had a few steps back in that area and others, but anyway. . .), his vestibular (balance) system needs work, and his sensory system is over responsive. Yes, these all work together in some ways, as do other areas that need some improvement (eye movement and attention).  OK, so it sounds that if Joey is a mess.  He's not, he just has some "glitches" I would like worked out prior to Kindergarten.  He has some frustrations that don't need to be there.  He does "hold it together" at school which I am thankful for, but then I look like the inadequate parent if I mention any difficulties at home.  (Obviously, this is one of my insecurities.)  I need to be thankful that Jose has been fairly supportive with my adventures.

I had recently read that we are at "Earth School."  It guides my perspective to see this as a learning experience and challenge - instead of internalizing it.  I will say that perspective helps.  I know this is only making me a better, more empathetic therapist in my job, also.  Life is all about growing, right?  Right.

Spring Break, Austin, Day 3

Joey was excited about leaving town, but somehow got the idea we were flying.  I think he was a little disappointed that we didn't.  When talking to various people in Austin, he would mention his "home country."  They would ask where he was from, he would reply, "San Antonio, Texas."

Fatherhood, similar to childhood in many ways.

Teen Titans, Joey's most recent obsession.

We ate lunch on the river.

We admired the "big catch" from the pier.

Joey enjoyed dancing (AKA rocking) back
and forth.

We fed the ducks and other birds from our seats.

Joey enjoyed it all, as usual!  I really enjoy his
excitement about life.  Life is more fun with Joey!

Day 2, Continued (with special photos)

Marti took some good photos of us at the wildflower park.  Here they are!

My beautiful guy in the bluebonnets!

OK, not my best photo, but Marti thought it was funny.
Let me explain. . . I was trying to get Joey to smile for the photos!

My boys!

Spring Break, Austin, Day 2

Joey's favorite food is Chinese!  While visiting Suzi's Kitchen
in Austin, Joey had a special relationship with this fish.  It
would follow him wherever he went.  He always has such a
great time with the little things!

"Keep Austin Wierd"

Joey just had to have these glasses.  "Batman glasses!" he
declared!

We met my friend Marti and her two children at the Lady Bird
Johnson Wildflower park.  We are on our way to the tower/
lookout area.  Joey took a photo of me.

Marti is so much fun!  She can always get the
kids involved.

Joey asked me and Jose if he could grow his hair out in the back.  When I asked why, he explained that he wanted to wear a ponytail.  Puzzled, I asked where he came up with that idea.  He said all the girls in his class wear them and he wanted one, too.  I love Joey, always thinking outside the box.

Spring Break, Austin Day 1

Jose has not had an out-of-town vacation in quite some time.  He had three days off during our Spring Break so we took a three day trip to Austin.  We really had a nice time, good family fun.  No agenda - just enjoying the city and the beautiful weather.

We decided to enjoy the water activities and had planned on
paddle boating.  However, as we walked through the hotel to
get to the river, Joey spotted the glass elevators.  What an
adventure!

Jose and Joey getting ready to use the Aquacycle!

Enjoying the ride!

We walked along the river to the dog park.

This dog was so friendly - he would drop the ball in front of Joey
and then back up a few steps at a time as if saying, "Come on,
give it to me, come on!"  We laughed and laughed.  Joey would
throw it in the water, and the dog would retrieve it.

Oops!  Joey had a fall in the mud.  (Notice in the
above photo - that small dip in the ground.  Yep,
that was the culprit.)

Joey dancing to the music in the hotel bathroom
as I rinsed his clothes and washed him off.  We stopped
at the nearest clothing store, a vintage/costume shop.  Jose
came out with a Kermit the frog shirt for Joey.

We visited the largest urban bat colony in the world.
I should have taken a photo, but they live under a bridge.
It was a nice park area where Joey played tag with other
boys.  This is Jose and Joey watching the bats ascend high
in the sky.

Here's a photo of just a few of the thousands of bats trailing
out into the sky.

Pretend Play

For memories sake, for me.  Joey has recently had an "I can't"
stage we are trying to move through.  This was a visual
reminder of many of the things that he CAN do.

Batman is still a favorite - although this was his Halloween
costume a year and a half ago, he can still fit in it, barely.
I told him he looks more like the "real" Batman with the
tight fit.

Batman in Action!  By the way, I am Poison Ivy.  He has me
kiss him to make him fall asleep - so sweet.  This is a daily "game"
we play right now.  He could pretend for hours!

Dr. Seuss week at school - only one of the
many activities they completed, but, oh, so cute!
Horton Hears a Who

Joey's "Horton" picture

Just in case, you didn't know the real Horton.

My "Lunch Bunch" from work.  We get together once every 4
to 6 weeks.  We end up talking about work most of the time, but
it's nice since we don't work around other therapists on a regular
basis.  (We all have various campuses and are always on the go,
traveling between our campuses.)
